Speaker Series: Why Do LGBTQ+ Rights Remain So Insecure Given So Many Wins at the Supreme Court?

Steve Engel, Professor of Politics at Bates and Affiliated Scholar of the American Bar Foundation in Chicago, will join us to discuss LGBTQ+ rights and constitutional law.

The aim of this talk will emphasize why it is concerning that the Supreme Court has announced it will hear a first amendment case of a web designer who refuses to provide services to LGBTQ couples. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it has echoes of the 2018 bakery case, Masterpiece, in which the US Supreme Court narrowly ruled in favor of the baker because the Colorado Civil Rights Commision did not use religious neutrality in their review of the case.. Join Professor Stephen Engel as he walks you through why this case is concerning, and what can be done.
