Youth Engagement Program Internship

EqualityMaine has a rich history of empowering youth through leadership development and real world experiences. The Program Intern will primarily assist the Program Director with our youth initiatives, including our partnership with GLSEN Southern Maine, which includes supporting school GSTAs, providing programs for regional youth meetings, and working with youth leaders.  The Program Intern will also help coordinate our Supporting LGBTQ Youth Conference which happen on a regular basis. They may also be responsible for completing research projects to support the organizations’s work, reviewing educational guidelines and school policies that affect LGBTQ youth, and other related tasks associated with our youth programs and organizational events. 

Requirements: We are seeking enthusiastic interns who are passionate about our mission and possess the following attributes:

  • Interest in social justice and politics
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and computer-literate
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and independently
  • Experience working with youth and adults
  • Dependable and responsible
  • Demonstrated experience/knowledge related to the internship(s) for which you are applying.

Time requirements: Schedules can be flexible, but interns should be available at least 8-21 hours per week in our Portland office, with some occasional evening and weekend hours. We strongly encourage interns to arrange course credit from their school if possible. Internships are not paid positions. All interns will be encouraged to create a portfolio project over the course of their internship.
