Netflix and Chill w/ Friends Virtual Movie Series

We’re all doing our part to help #flattenthecurve by staying home and we know it can be lonely for some so we’re continuing to provide opportunities for virtual hangouts with a Netflix Party Series! So far we have movies scheduled for the next three weeks and will be announcing more soon.

This Saturday, April 11th we will be watching Hairspray! The movie will start at 7pm. We’ll share info on how to connect on Saturday.

We are using the Google Chrome extension called Netflix Party. We’ll be able to log in and watch the movie together with a chat feature to discuss the movie as you watch from the comfort of your home.

To participate, you have to:

1. Have your own Netflix account
2. Have a desktop or laptop with Google Chrome web browser
3. Install the Netflix Party Chrome Extension: https://www.netflixparty.com/

This is an event aimed at bringing our community together in a safe space to connect with each other and share an LGBTQ+ oriented film. We expect that everyone keeps their contributions to the conversation appropriate for a public community chat room. Please help keep the conversations fun and positive without profanities or anything hateful or offensive. EqualityMaine staff will be monitoring the chat over the course of the movie, but the Netflix Party platform does not allow us to moderate the room. We will address any concerns during the movie and will ultimately have to end the party if anyone does not respect the guidelines, creating an unwelcoming or unsafe space.

So, you may be asking how does this Netflix Party work? Here’s what you need to do before 7 PM on Saturday:

• If you don’t already have Google Chrome as your web browser, you need to download it. You can get it here: https://www.google.com/chrome/
• You then need to install the Netflix Party extension. To do so, visit: https://www.netflixparty.com/
• Start off by clicking the “Install Netflix Party” button on this page.
• Once you are redirected to the Chrome Web Store, click “Add to Chrome” to finish installing Netflix Party.
• Come back here to the event web page between 6:45 and 7pm and we will share the URL for the party.
• To join the party click on the party URL, which will redirect to Netflix’s website.
• Then click on the “NP” button next to the address bar, and you should automatically join the party.

Enjoy the party with friends and share your thoughts in the chat as we watch the film.

NOTE: We know that this is limiting for those who don’t have Netflix accounts or who do not have a laptop/desktop computer and we are trying to figure out other fun ways to do similar things in more accessible ways in the near future. Please feel free to reach out with any suggestions.
