Communications Director / Coordinator


Position Description

EqualityMaine has an immediate, full-time job opening for a Communications Director or Communications Coordinator. We are looking for an energetic and self-motivated individual to join our efforts to defend and advance full equality for LGBTQ+ people in Maine. The position will be based in Portland and will report directly to the Executive Director; the difference in title and salary is related to an applicant’s experience.  The start date is February 2019.

About EqualityMaine

Founded in 1984, EqualityMaine is the voice of public education and advocacy for LGBTQ+ people in Maine. We build grassroots political power to advance equality legislation, defeat anti-LGBTQ+ referenda, and elect pro-LGBTQ+ candidates. As part of a broader social justice movement, we work in coalition with progressive organizations in Maine and around the country. EqualityMaine currently employs five full-time staff. 

About the Position

The Communications Director/Coordinator will work as part of a dynamic team to develop and implement a strategic communications plan that will maximize the level of public support for LGBTQ+ equality in Maine.  To this end, the Communications Director is responsible for:

  • Managing proactive and reactive media relations for the organization.
  • Designing and implementing earned media strategies.
  • Developing relationships with reporters and editorial boards, pitching stories, and arranging media interviews.
  • Writing press releases and media advisories, op-eds and letters-to-the-editor, fact sheets, talking points, speeches, and other materials.
  • Monitoring and reporting on the organization’s press hits and other relevant news stories.
  • Working with coalition partners and consultants to develop and implement communications strategies and message frameworks for specific target audiences.
  • Leading our supporter mobilization program by:
    • planning and creating effective action alerts, including setting up email blasts in organizational database, aimed at motivating our supporters to take action
    • developing messaging for electoral, GOTV, fundraising, event marketing and legislative accountability
    • setting goals, measures for success, strategies and tactics, with frequent updates
    • Adapting plans for execution on social media platforms
    • Working closely with other staff to ensure overall consistency in organizational message and communications.


  • Demonstrated experience in communications, preferably in a political or social justice setting. Political campaign or advocacy experience a plus. 
  • Demonstrated experience in performing pro-active media outreach and generating positive media coverage.
  • Experience leading social media strategy, developing content, and increasing engagement
  • Familiarity with creating, managing, and updating website content
  • Ability to absorb complex policy issue information and communicate about it to a broader audience
  • Strong skills in framing issues for specific audiences and developing simple and effective advocacy materials.
  • Ability to be a team player and work in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated and the desire to excel. 
  • Attention to measurable results.  
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills.
  • Basic graphic design skills.
  • Ability to produce well-written materials under pressure of deadlines.
  • Strong work ethic.  Willingness and ability to travel and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. 
  • Must be passionate about LGBT equality. Prior experience working in LGBT community is strongly desired.   
  • Knowledge of Maine progressive community and political environment a plus.
  • Strong verbal, and interpersonal communications skills required.
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license

Compensation: Salary based on experience.
