The Laramie Project
The Laramie Project. This student theatrical performance sponsored by UNE's Gay/Straight Alliance. The Laramie Project is a play by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project about the reaction to the 1998 murder of University of Wyoming gay student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming. The murder is widely considered to be a hate crime motivated by homophobia. The play, based more than 200 interviews conducted with people of the town, chronicles the life of the town of Laramie in the year after the murder. The Laramie Project is one of the most performed plays in the U.S. today. Free and open to the public.
