Gubernatorial Candidates 101

This is a critical election year in Maine.

In November, voters will elect a new governor.  This new governor will almost certainly either sign or veto a marriage equality bill during his or her tenure.  Imagine how devastating it would be to have our next marriage bill vetoed by an anti-equality governor.

We cannot let this happen.  We must elect a pro-marriage governor.

There are more than 25 people running for governor, but the field will narrow soon.  After Primary Day, there will be three final candidates from a political party—Democrat, Republican and Green—as well as a number of Independents.  We have a unique opportunity, if we work hard enough, to ensure that all of the leading candidates are pro-marriage.  If not, we will be up against a very difficult-to-beat anti-equality candidate.

While November is still months away, there is something you can do right now to help the pro-marriage candidates in this race.

Those running as Clean Elections candidates need $5 qualifying contributions while the others need your overall support.  You don’t have to choose just one of the candidates below—in fact, we urge you to support them all!  So click on the candidate’s name below and find out what you can do to help.

Eliot Cutler, Independent
Donna Dion, Democrat *
Pat McGowan, Democrat *
Peter Mills, Republican *
Libby Mitchell, Democrat *
John Richardson, Democrat *
Steve Rowe, Democrat
Rosa Scarcelli, Democrat
Lynne Williams, Green

*Indicates Clean Elections Candidate

Electing a pro-marriage governor will be crucial in winning back marriage in Maine. Supporting these candidates is a step in that direction.
