ACTION ALERT - EQME Opposes Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education
Tomorrow, January 31, the US Senate committee will vote on the nomination of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education. As it stands, the vote is VERY close and our own Senator Susan Collins has the ability to cast the deciding vote to reject this nomination.
Betsy DeVos is dangerous for LGBT students. She and her family have contributed millions of dollars to promote ignorance and oppose basic civil rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans. We have zero confidence in her ability to set aside her hostility towards LGBT people and serve the needs of all students equally.
The DeVos family's anti-LGBT donations include:
Millions of dollars in donations from the Edgar and Elsa Prince Foundation, of which Betsy DeVos was the Vice President from 2001 to 2013, to Focus on the Family - one of the nation’s most anti-LGBT organizations that encourages the dangerous practice of so-called 'conversion therapy' and called homosexuality 'preventable and treatable.'
The Douglas and Maria DeVos Foundation, run by DeVos's in-laws, donated $500,000 to the National Organization for Marriage, which spent millions of dollars opposing marriage equality across the country and here in Maine.
- DeVos's mother donated $450,000 to support Proposition 8 in California.
At her confirmation hearing, DeVos described her status as vice president of the Prince foundation as a 'clerical error.' In addition, she was unwilling to answer other important questions affecting LGBT youth, including whether she would keep essential protections for transgender students issued by the Obama administration. Shockingly, she also suggested that enforcement of civil rights protections for students be given to the states.
CALL SENATOR COLLINS NOW TO ASK HER TO OPPOSE THE NOMINATION OF BETSY DEVOS FOR SECRETARY OF EDUCATION!
